The Orchid Gardens of Lake Garden

Posted by anak wilayah on December 29, 2009

Kuala Lumpur is a great city and one where visitors are spoilt for choice with so many and varied options for entertainment. Being a country girl, I find big cities drain the life out of me very quickly and I can easily get overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle. When that happens, I’ll try to find somewhere clean, quiet and peaceful to feed my need to escape. If it’s beautiful and interesting as well, then that’s a big bonus.

Such escape might seem like a tall order in a full-on high-octane shopping-frenzy city like KL so the purpose of this review is to share my top tip for regaining your sanity. The answer is the Orchid Garden in KL Lake Gardens.

KL Lake Gardens (or Taman Tasik Perdana) lies up a hill over-looking the city. There is probably a bus service up there but the two times I’ve been I have taken taxis. Surprisingly, even that can be a problem. Getting up there is relatively easy – just grab a cab at any taxi stand in the city – but getting back can be a struggle. The gardens don’t seem to be on the standard KL taxi driver’s prowling route so you can struggle to find a cab when you are ready to head back to town. You may have to loiter outside the entrance to the Orchid Gardens or one of the other attractions and wait for another visitor to arrive in a taxi. Then you should pounce and grab their driver for the return journey.

Last time we asked the driver who took us to come back an hour later. If you aren’t sure how long you will be, take his driver’s mobile number and call him 20 mins before you need him – drivers in KL are very accommodating and most of the younger ones speak understandable English – I think they learned for the Commonwealth Games a few years ago. From memory, I think we paid around £5 for the ride each way – it won’t break the bank.

If this all sounds like a bit too much trouble take my word for it, it’s not. The KL Orchid Gardens are worth the bother. They have more than 2000 different species of orchid – including more than 800 that are native to Malaysia.

Desa Waterpark is one of the largest amusement parks in Malaysia. Located in between the KL – Seremban Highway, the water park is built over an area of 12.6 acres and is bordered by 50 acres of lake. This fun-filled waterpark makes the best choice for people in quest of leisure and enjoyment. Due to a brilliant network of roads, Desa Water Park is easily accessible from most of the parts of Kuala Lumpur. It offers wholesome family entertainment and owing to its commendable features, it serves as an ideal place for hosting gatherings and family get-togethers.

In fact, Desa Waterpark has become preferred choice of families and corporate group functions because of its great features, such as, huge space, amphitheatre, free parking space, and cutthroat pricing. Several attractions at the water park are Thunder Bolt, Surf Shack, Tarzan In Town, Action River, Water Factory, Clown-A- Round, Pink Slide, Shock Wave, etc. Where the Thunder Bolt attracts the most patrons being the longest and the first gravity-defying water coaster in Asia, children get the most out of the Surf Shack.

The Tarzan In Town is a water based activity where you get to jump from one tube to another. Take it as a challenge and balance yourself on the tubes, while hanging on the ropes without getting wet. Enjoy the cascading waters of Action River which is 1200 meter long. And get ready to get into a water fight at the Desa WaterparkWater Factory, where you can shoot water at your friends. Get wet and set your mood to swing in the Clown-A-Round. The Pink Slide is a set of multiple slides for children where fun never ends.

Jump into an awesome wave pool, Shock Wave, and test your strength while conquering the waves as high as 1.5 meters. Another attraction is Ripple Bay which is just next to the Shock Wave; it is an open space for tele-match activities and lap swimmers. Get into the Bubble Pool and relax together with your family or friends. Last but not the least, access the Super Tube which is a hardcore concept of tropical slides and let your body free in the 30-ft high twisting and turning twin water slide. In short, Desa WaterPark, which is a lagoon of fun and excitement, is a not-to-be-missed-out place in Kuala Lumpur.

What to Wear in Kuala Lumpur

Posted by anak wilayah on December 29, 2009

Kuala Lumpur is a cosmopolitan city that is modern in all aspects, be it fashion or technology. If you are visiting the city and thinking about what to wear and how to dress in KL, then be at ease as you can wear whatever you want to, till it is not offendable. The city is open to the contemporary fashion and here people wear almost every type of clothing. Considering that the city observes equatorial climate marked by high levels of humidity, one should prefer wearing light cotton clothes to escape the heat and sweat.

For instance, clothes like t-shirts, short pants and bermudas are actually suitable in such climatic conditions. Rain showers are common in KL, so it’s better to wear light clothes that can dry up easily. To shield yourself from the bright sun, prefer wearing cap and sunglasses. Also use enough of sunscreen lotion, whenever you’re out. Since shopping malls, stores and restaurants are usually covered and air-conditioned; there you need not to worry about sunscreen or any other such thing.

While going to mosques, don’t prefer wearing skimpy or revealing clothes because Muslims are against such practice. Though there is no particular dress code, it is advisable to dress decently so as to avoid any unwanted attention. Kuala Lumpur is an advanced city and how to dress is one’s personal choice. It’s better to dress modestly and look good, rather than appearing weird or stupid. To sum up, casual decent clothing, preferably in cotton, is best to be dressed in Kuala Lumpur.

The Thean Hou temple in Kuala Lumpur

Posted by anak wilayah on December 28, 2009

The Thean Hou Temple is a landmark six-tiered Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur. It is located on a 1.67 acres (6,760 m²) of land atop Robson Heights along Lorong Bellamy, overlooking Jalan Syed Putra. It was completed in 1987 and officially opened in 1989. The property belongs to and is run by the Selangor & Federal Territory Hainan Association (Persatuan Hainan Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan). This temple, built by the Hainanese community living in Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to Goddess Tian Hou (The Heavenly Mother).

This syncretic temple with elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism is a grandiose structure and represents a successful combination of modern architectural techniques and authentic traditional design featuring imposing pillars, spectacular roofs, ornate carvings and intricate embellishments. Its grand architecture has made it a popular tourist destination.

The front entrance of the temple features a multi-arched gateway with red pillars, the colour symbolic of prosperity and good fortune. Souvenir stalls and a canteen are found on the 1st level. The 2nd level houses the multi-purpose hall while offices are located on the 3rd level. The 4th level has 3 tiers and the prayer hall is located here.

The prayer hall houses 3 altars, each with a sculpture of one deity or goddess. As one enters the prayer hall, the altar on the right is dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Tian Hou is in the centre while Shui Wei Sheng Niang (the Goddess of the Waterfront) is at the left. In the middle of the hall and between the altars are two pairs of Kau Cim oracles that can be used by visitors.

Despite the dedication to Tian Hou, worship of Guan Yin (or “Guan Shi-Yin”) is a recurrent theme at the Thean Hou Temple.
